The culinary world is mourning the loss of Dave Myers, one half of the popular TV cooking duo, The Hairy Bikers. Myers passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2024, at the age of 66, after fighting cancer for two years. He kept his illness private and continued to work on his latest TV project, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which premiered earlier this month.
Myers and his co-star and friend, Si King, formed The Hairy Bikers in 2004, and since then, they have entertained millions of viewers with their adventurous and humorous approach to food and travel. They have hosted several hit shows, such as The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook, The Hairy Bikers Ride Again, The Hairy Bakers, The Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour of Britain, The Hairy Dieters, and The Hairy Bikers’ Asian Adventure. They have also written over 20 bestselling books and launched their own magazine, The Hairy Bikers’ Magazine, in 2019.
King announced Myers’ death on social media, saying that he was “devastated” by the news and that Myers was “the best mate and cooking partner anyone could wish for”. He also praised Myers’ courage and energy, saying that he “never gave up” and “always made the most of everything”. King added that he was “proud” of their work together and that he would “miss him terribly”.
Many fans and celebrities also expressed their condolences and admiration for Myers on social media, calling him a “legend”, a “gentleman”, and a “brilliant chef”. Some of them shared their favourite memories of watching The Hairy Bikers and thanked Myers for inspiring them to cook and travel. Others commented on Myers’ kindness and generosity, saying that he was always “friendly” and “down to earth”.
Myers is survived by his wife, Liliana Orzac, whom he married in 2011, and his son, Ben, from his previous marriage. He also leaves behind his beloved motorbike, which he named “Doris”. Myers once said that riding his bike was his “therapy” and that he felt “free” on the road. He also said that he loved cooking because it was a “way of showing love” and that he wanted to “make people happy” with his food.
Myers will be remembered as a passionate and talented chef, a charismatic and witty presenter, and a loyal and loving friend. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace, Dave Myers.
