The trailer for the live-action Snow White remake has sparked a wave of online fury that’s more “Grumpy” than “Happy.” With Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, this fairy tale update has some fans shouting “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who thought this was a good idea at all?”
Rachel Zegler, the breakout star of West Side Story, was cast as the iconic princess. An actress of Polish-Colombian descent playing a character described as having “skin as white as snow” didn’t exactly sit well with some corners of the internet. But she clapped back at the haters by posting childhood photos of herself dressed as a princess, tweeting “I hope every child knows they can be a princess no matter what”.
If there’s one thing the internet loves more than a good remake, it’s tearing that remake to shreds. The teaser trailer for Snow White dropped, and the online critics were ready with their pitchforks. The biggest gripe? This isn’t your grandmother’s Snow White. No more pining for Prince Charming or waiting around for a kiss to wake her up. Oh no, this Snow White has dreams of leadership, ambition, and becoming the “fairest” ruler in the land. And if you think that didn’t go down well, you’re absolutely right.
The casting of Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen has raised eyebrows too, but not for the reasons you might think. It turns out, some fans are scratching their heads at the idea that the Evil Queen—traditionally an aging beauty obsessed with staying young—looks better than Snow White herself. “It doesn’t work when the evil queen is better looking than Snow White,” quipped one YouTube commenter, because apparently, in the land of Disney, only one woman is allowed to be beautiful at a time.
The trailer also gave us a glimpse of those seven famous dwarfs, or at least their CGI counterparts. And this is where things get really tricky. After all, what’s a Snow White remake without seven vertically challenged sidekicks? Enter Peter Dinklage, who wasn’t too pleased with Disney’s decision to rehash what he called a “f—ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together.” And honestly, can you blame him?
Disney, realizing it had stepped into a minefield, quickly reassured everyone that they had consulted with members of the dwarfism community to avoid reinforcing outdated stereotypes. Because nothing says “we’re totally not tone-deaf” like needing to be reminded that portraying people with dwarfism as cave-dwelling miners might not be the most progressive idea.
With the film scheduled for release on March 21, 2025, Disney still has time to win over its disgruntled fan base. But if the initial reaction to the trailer is anything to go by, they’ve got their work cut out for them. Whether it’s the casting choices, the modern “woke” storyline, or the questionable costume design, it seems that no matter what Disney does, it’s impossible to please everyone.
