Cori Broadus, the daughter of rap legend Snoop Dogg and his wife Shante, shocked her fans on Thursday when she announced that she had a stroke at the age of 24. She shared the news on her Instagram story, along with a photo of herself in a hospital bed.
“I had a severe stroke this am,” she wrote, adding two crying emojis. “I started breaking down crying when they told me. Like I’m only 24 what did I do in my past to deserve all of this.”
Broadus, who is also a singer and the CEO of the beauty company Choc Factory, has been living with lupus since she was six years old. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy cells, leading to inflammation, pain, organ damage, and other symptoms.
She told People magazine last year that she had stopped taking medication for her condition and was opting for a natural approach, using herbs, teas, sea moss, and water. She also said she was working out and drinking lots of water.
“I think my body’s like, okay, this is the new program and she’s getting used to it,” she said at the time.
However, her health took a turn for the worse on Thursday morning, when she suffered a stroke. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. It can result in paralysis, speech problems, memory loss, vision loss, and other complications.
According to the Stroke Association, stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. The association advises people to use the FAST acronym to identify the signs of a stroke: Face weakness, Arm weakness, Speech problems, and Time to call 911.
Broadus received an outpouring of support from her friends and followers on Instagram, who sent her messages of love and prayers. She responded by saying, “I love you, I love you.”
Her father, Snoop Dogg, has not publicly commented on his daughter’s condition. The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, known for his hits such as Gin & Juice, Drop It Like It’s Hot, and Signs. He also has two sons, Corde and Cordell, with his wife Shante.
