Pierce Brosnan, the actor best known for his role as James Bond, has been cited for trespassing in a restricted thermal area of Yellowstone National Park. The incident occurred on December 27, 2023, when Brosnan was filming a movie near the park.
According to park officials, Brosnan entered a closed area near the Mammoth Hot Springs and walked on the fragile crust of a thermal feature. He was spotted by a park ranger, who issued him a citation for violating the park’s regulations. Brosnan faces a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Yellowstone National Park is home to the world’s largest collection of geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles. These features are formed by the underground volcanic activity that heats the water and creates steam. The park has designated boardwalks and trails for visitors to safely view and enjoy these natural wonders. However, some areas are closed to the public due to the high risk of injury or death from scalding water, thin crust, or toxic gases.
Brosnan is not the first celebrity to get into trouble in Yellowstone. In 2016, four members of a Canadian online prank group called High on Life were charged with multiple violations after they walked on the Grand Prismatic Spring, one of the park’s most iconic and colorful hot springs. They later pleaded guilty and paid fines and restitution.
Brosnan was in Montana to shoot a movie called The Last Rifleman, in which he plays a World War II veteran who escapes from a nursing home and embarks on a journey to France. The movie is expected to be released in 2024.
Brosnan has not commented publicly on the trespassing citation. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 23, 2024.
